Co-Founder

Dr. Syed Mohiuddin, MD

Dr. Syed Mohiuddin is a founding member of American Muslim Institute (AMI) and currently serves as its president. He represents AMI on the executive committee and board of directors of the Tri-Faith Initiative of Omaha.

 

Dr. Mohiuddin received his medical degree from Osmania University in India. He completed his residency in internal medicine at Creighton University Medical Center (CUMC) and cardiovascular fellowship training at The Cardiac Center of CUMC. He went on to earn a doctor of science in medicine degree at Laval University in Quebec, Canada.

 

Dr. Mohiuddin returned to Omaha in 1970 when he joined Creighton University’s School of Medicine as a full-time faculty member, and he has lived and worked in the community since. He served as chief of the School of Medicine’s Division of Cardiology and director of The Cardiac Center from 1996 to 2007, and in March of 2007, Dr. Mohiuddin was named Chair, Department of Medicine. In 2005, Dr. Mohiuddin was named the first holder of the Richard W. Booth, M.D., Endowed Professorship in Cardiology.

Kulsoom Mohiuddin joined AMI Board in 2017. She is graduated from Creighton University and works at KinderCare Learning Center.

Mr. Karim Khayati

President/Co-Founder

Karim Khayati is a co-founder of AMI and currently serves as vice president. He is also a board member of the Tri-Faith Initiative of Omaha. Both positions reflect his passion for continuing to make Omaha a thriving, diverse community.

​

Khayati is a native of Tunisia. He received his bachelor of science degree from the Institut des Hautes Etudes Commerciales Carthage-Tunisia and moved to the United States in 1998, where he received his MBA from Creighton University. Khayati has made his home in the Omaha community ever since, raising his four children here with his wife, Olfa.

​

Khayati is a longstanding information technology professional covering a diverse range of industries including Agribusiness, financial and software development.

Dr. Hesham Basma

Vice President

Dr. Hesham Basma is a member of the AMI board of directors since 2014.

​

Dr. Basma completed his bachelor’s degree in pharmaceutical sciences and his master’s degree in pharmaceutical sciences (biochemistry) from Al-Azhar University in Cairo, Egypt. He was then awarded a two-year scholarship to complete the research component of his Ph.D. training at the University of Tennessee (Memphis) and subsequently received his Ph.D. in Molecular Biology from Al-Azhar University.

Dr. Basma came to Omaha in 2001 to join the biochemistry department at the University of Nebraska Medical Center as a post-doctoral research associate. He is currently an assistant professor in the department of internal medicine at UNMC and is also an on-call pharmacist at Lakeside Hospital’s inpatient pharmacy.

Farhan Khan

Treasurer

Farhan Khan has been on the AMI board since 2011 and now serves as treasurer. He also serves as a board member of the Tri-Faith Initiative of Omaha and is involved in many community organizations.

​

Khan, a graduate of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, has lived in Nebraska for over 25 years. He and his wife Fatima have two children.

​

Khan is a business owner and active member of the Omaha community.

Abdul Mackie

Secretary

Abdul M. Mackie, has been living in Omaha since 2017 and has been a congregation member of AMI since 2018.  He volunteers his time with the Tri-Faith Initiative and AMI.  Mackie is employed by the United States Department of Veterans Affairs in Lincoln, where he serves as the Education Liaison Representative for the states of Kansas and Iowa.  

Prior to joining the VA, he worked for the Ford Motor Company as a Human Resource Associate in both Dearborn Michigan and Buffalo New York, and has also worked for non-profit education and training, and social service agencies in the metropolitan Detroit area.  He received a Master of Arts degree in Education from the University of Detroit-Mercy and a Bachelors of Arts degree in History from the University of Michigan-Dearborn.

Marium Ilahi, MD

Board of Directors

Dr. Marium Ilahi joined AMI Late 2017. Dr. Marium Ilahi is an internal medicine doctor specialized in endocrinology, diabetes and metabolism.

Dr. Nassiba Adjerid

Board of Directors

Dr. Nassiba Adjerid received her bachelors and doctorate degrees in Biological Sciences from Virginia Tech and is currently an associate professor in the biology department at the College of Saint Mary.

 

Nassiba and her family have been part of the Omaha community since Fall of 2008.

Moe Elatta

Board of Directors

Moe has been a congregation member of the American Muslim Institute (AMI) since 2017. Over the years, he has actively contributed to the community through various initiatives, including assisting with fundraising campaigns, organizing community potlucks and Ramadan Iftars, and helping orchestrate the highly successful Taste of Palestine event in June 2024.

 

Professionally, Moe serves as the Director of Delivery Engineering at Lunavi, where he leads a team of Delivery Engineers. With over 16 years of experience at Lunavi, he has played a pivotal role in app modernization efforts leveraging Microsoft Azure.

 

Moe holds a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science from Bellevue University. Originally from Sudan, he spent much of his upbringing in Saudi Arabia before moving to the United States during his senior year of high school. He has since made Omaha, Nebraska, his home.

 

Moe is married and the proud father of three boys, two of whom, Taji and Aydin, attend the AMI Academy. He cherishes his role in both his family and the AMI community, working to foster meaningful connections and growth.

Bintou Taal

Board of Directors

Bintou Taal has been a congregation member of AMI since 2017. She is the Manager of SCADA Systems for Metropolitan Utilities District (MUD). Bintou is a graduate of Bellevue University and holds an Emerging Leader Series certificate from University of Nebraska Omaha. She is an active volunteering member of the Omaha community. She is passionate about education, environmental justice and loves volunteering.

Feroz Mohmand

Board of Directors

Feroz Mohmand is a distinguished individual with a rich history of service and advocacy. He held the role of press coordinator for H.E. Hamid Karzai, the former president of Afghanistan, where he played a vital part in managing communications and enhancing public relations during a pivotal time in the country’s history. In addition to his work with President Karzai, he served as a liaison officer at the U.S. Embassy and collaborated with various international organizations, fostering relationships that were essential for diplomatic efforts and humanitarian aid.

 

Having once been a refugee himself, Feroz understands the challenges faced by displaced individuals, which inspires his relentless commitment to advocacy. His journey led him to become a U.S. citizen, where he has continued his dedication to service and community building. His notable contributions include serving as a board member of the Refugee Empowerment Center (RIC), where he worked to empower refugees through various support programs, and at the Afghan Islamic Community Center of Omaha (AICCO), promoting cultural integration and community cohesion.

 

Feroz's personal life is equally compelling; he is married to Gharghashta (G), a remarkable woman who made history by being one of the youngest individuals ever elected to Afghanistan’s Parliament. Currently, Feroz continues his commitment to community service as a board member at the American Muslim Institute (AMI), where he actively contributes to promoting understanding and collaboration among diverse communities while supporting socio-economic development initiatives.
